| Ross Harris (1945) is a freelance composer, teacher and performer. Ross Harris was born in the small town of Amberley in North Canterbury, New Zealand. He was educated in Christchurch and attended the University of Canterbury, where he gained his BMus before moving to Victoria University of Wellington to complete his MMus. He was appointed a lecturer in music at Victoria University in 1971 and is currently Associate Professor there. He played tuba and french horn in the National Youth Orchestra, and french horn in the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra for a short time. In 1978 he spent three months in Stockholm on a Swedish Institute Scholarship working in EMS Stockholm. He is a founding member (1982 to date) of the live electronic music ensemble Free Radicals. In 1985, following the premiere of his opera Waituhi, Harris was awarded the QSM for Public Service. In 1990 he was awarded the CANZ Citation for Services to New Zealand Music. His works, numbering more than 100, include many piano pieces, several operas, orchestral works, jazz and rock music. |
