| Matthew Hindson (1968) is an Australian freelance composer. A leading figure in Australia's younger generation of composers, Matthew studied composition at the Universities of Sydney and Melbourne with teachers including Peter Sculthorpe, Eric Gross, Brenton Broadstock and Anne Boyd. He is currently undertaking a Ph.D. in composition from the Music Department at the University of Sydney, studying with Ross Edwards. Matthew's works have been performed by many Australian ensembles and orchestras throughout the country, and have also been presented in New Zealand, Germany, France, Austria, Great Britain, Italy, Portugal, the USA, Canada and Japan. He has represented Australia at many international composition festivals and competitions, including the 1994 Gaudeamus Music Week in Amsterdam, the 1995 Bangkok Music Festival, the 1996 ISCM World Music Days in Copenhagen and the 1997 Paris Rostrum, and his music has won awards both nationally and internationally Performances in 1998 included RPM at Symphony Under the Stars, Lite-SPEED by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and Technologic 145 by the WASO 20th Century Ensemble (as part of the ABC Young Composer of the Year Competition). In 1999, Matthew was working as the attached composer to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. This residency included the composition of a number of new works for the SSO to present over the coming seasons, including BoomBox for three percussionists with orchestra, three Siegfried Interludes and a concerto for amplified cello and orchestra (to be premiered in 2000). Throughout 1999 his works were performed by other ensembles including the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Slava Grigoryan with the Goldner String Quartet, Marshall Maguire, the Elektra String Quartet and The Song Company. Matthew's music displays influences of popular music styles within a classical music context. With his particular interest in the techno and death-metal genres, driving repeated rhythms and loud dynamic levels are typical elements of his work. A directness and immediacy to the listener is also a common feature of the majority of his music. |
