Program note Calenture is a disease incident to sailors in the tropics, characterised by a delirium in which, it is said, they fancy the sea to be green fields and desire to leap into it.

"Knowledge kindles calenture in some..." John Donne

Calenture is a work in four short movements (duration c. 9 minutes), in which the unusual ensemble of electric guitar and piano duo is explored as much for its inherent impressionistic possibilities as for its obvious rhythmic potential. The pianists at times play harmonics inside the pianos, and in the second movement one pianist is called on to play percussion. The guitarist requires an EBow and basic effects pedals.

The work was commissioned by Double Edge
, the New York-based piano duo of Edmund Niemann and Nurit Tilles. Calenture has been recorded by Neil Becker (guitar), Dan Poynton (pianos) and Murray Hickman (percussion) on the CD Rhythm Spike (Rattle Records), which features chamber and instrumental works by John Psathas.
