PROMETHEAN EDITIONS TO PUBLISH COMPLETE WORKS OF LARRY PRUDEN
13 May 2002 Promethean Editions announced today that it is to publish the complete works of the New Zealand composer Larry Pruden. Pruden, who died in 1982, is best-known for his works for orchestra and strings, including the overture Taranaki, Dances of Brittany for string orchestra, and the String Trio. His complete catalogue runs to some 62 works, including music for piano, chamber ensemble and orchestra, incidental music for theatre and film and even radio advertising jingles. The works will be released in a series of ten volumes under the Larry Pruden Collected Edition imprint.
The series will be released over a seven-year period, and it is planned that the first volume (Works for Piano Solo) will be published later this year. The publication process will be overseen by a Advisory Panel consisting of Penny Pruden (widow of the composer and executor of his Estate), Dr Robert Hoskins (Massey University), Scilla Askew (Centre for New Zealand Music), Kate Mead (Concert FM), Jack Body (Victoria University), Thomas Liggett and Ross Hendy (Promethean Editions).
Promethean Editions will also take over the administration of the hire library of Prudens orchestral works, which is currently administered by Penny Pruden.
Dr Hoskins, Series Editor said today, "This is first time that a New Zealand composer has been the subject of a collected edition, and it is important in a project such as this that the academic fraternity works closely with private enterprise."
Ross Hendy, Managing Director, said "Since its inception in 1997, Promethean Editions has focused on the publication of new contemporary music and we have been particularly successful with the music of New Zealanders Gareth Farr and John Psathas. For some time we been aware of several opportunities to promote the music of New Zealands past and we are pleased to begin with this Larry Pruden Collected Edition."
Promethean Editions have posted a provisional list of works to be published on their website: www.promethean-editions.com.
